UANL outlasted three strong contenders to win the Mexican Big Six in 2018-19, the second year we have tracked it.
The Mexican Big Six produced a tight race in 2018-19 with the four top clubs separated by three points when it closed.
UANL came out on top of the pile with five wins and 18 standings points in 10 games, one point up on Club América. Toluca made a surprising run at the end to finish third with 16 points. Monterrey, the undefeated and dominating Big Six champ of 2017-18, finished fourth at 15 points.
The key game of the season took place on March 9, when UANL salvaged a 1-1 draw at Monterrey. A Monterrey win would have flipped the race. Instead, UANL finished the game with 17 points, compared with 14 each for Monterrey and Club América.
Monterrey's chance to rally for a title defense was revived when América smashed UANL, 3-0 in Mexico City on March 30, and it was looking like this race could really heat up. However, Monterrey and América both lost down the stretch to Toluca and Tijuana, while UANL squeezed a draw out of last-place Morelia.
The two wins for Toluca were enough to rally for the Big Six bronze medal, but the two similar wins for Tijuana could not spare it from relegation. Tijuana is going down to the Middle Six with Morelia, which had just been promoted.
After winning the Mexican Little Six in 2017-18, Santos Laguna won the Middle Six in 2018-19 and now is headed to the Big Six in 2019-20. On the flip side, Guadalajara finished fifth in the Big Six in 2017-18, then finished fifth in the Middle Six in 2018-19, so it now is headed to the Little Six in 2019-20. Joining Santos in promotion is León. Going down with Guadalajara is Necaxa.
Puebla, which finished at the very bottom of the Mexican Little Six in 2017-18, finished on top of that group in 2018-19 and now is going up to the Middle Six. Lobos BUAP, which had just been demoted from the Middle Six, now is going back up there after a second-place finish at the bottom tier in 2018-19.
