Rangers nudge past three foes as best team in 2016 AL traveler

The Texas Rangers won their second Team of the Year designation in the American League traveling championship, winning three separate titles to hold off three other strong contenders.

The Texas Rangers prevailed in a wild 2016 for the traveling championship across the American League.

The Rangers did it in small pieces, winning three championships and holding them for a total of 28 games, nudging past challenges from the Minnesota Twins, the Baltimore Orioles and the Houston Astros.

The Rangers defended one of those titles only once and another not at all, but a three-week romp in June put them over the top. The difference was the tiebreaker in a four-game split at New York against the Yankees June 27-30. The Rangers outscored the Yankees, 24-18, to keep the prize for a meeting with the Twins, who then beat them two of three in Minneapolis July 1-3.

The Twins defended that championship twice, then won another in late July with three August defenses to come within reach of the Rangers. But the Texas club claimed another championship in September to seal the deal.

The Rangers won the Team of the Year for the second time, first winning it with a dominant performance in 2011. The Rangers are the first club to be Team of the Year in the American League twice.

Twins win Killebrew annual, though it's disputed

The Minnesota Twins only broke even in their games for the American League Ear of Corn in 2015, but they receive the nod for Team of the Year because they were well better than anyone else at defending the prize.

In his first year as a Major League manager, Paul Molitor guided the Minnesota Twins to Team of the Year honors in the American League Ear of Corn (Public domain image).

The Minnesota Twins barely held onto the American League Ear of Corn for the second straight year. Despite winning only one of their last nine games in league corn competion, the Twins led the loop in every category except championships won.

The Twins won the championship twice, compared with three each for the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. But no team defended the title better than the Twins, who succeeded in five of seven title defenses.

The Twins finished only 17-17 in Harmon Killebrew games, holding it for 22 days to lead all clubs.

Toronto actually outplayed the Twins in games for the corn, going 19-12. However, the Jays only defended three of five championships.

Yankees may not be back, but they are in first

Dominating the American League East as they are, the New York Yankees are one of the surprise teams in the Major Leagues. And it's always surprising when the Yankees are surprising. In addition to being in first place for the last 30 days, the Yankees now hold the Harmon Killebrew Award.

It's certainly an unusual year when the New York Yankees tear through the American League and we say it's a surprise, but the Yankees are tearing through the AL, and no one saw it coming.

A prediction here and there might have made the Yankees a preseason favorite, but the very idea that the Yankees would somehow take a commanding lead in the American League East crossed almost no one's mind. The Yankees have been down for the last couple of years, way down by their high standards, and they did nothing during the offseason to suggest they would rebound.

But the Yankees are making it happen with one offensive outburst after another. They have gone so far as to take the Harmon Killebrew Award from the Texas Rangers this week because of one such outburst. Though the Yankees and Texas Rangers split four games in Arlington, TX, this week, the Yankees won the total runs tie-breaker, 35-19, thanks to a 21-5 victory on July 28.

The Rangers entered the series holding the Killebrew and the Henry Aaron Award, winning both last weekend by taking two of three from the Angels at home. The Rangers held onto the Aaron after their split with the Yankees because the champion holds onto that one unless it outright loses a series.

Remember 2012? It was the last time the Yankees won the American League East. It's also the last time the Yankees have had a season like this.

Entering games of Aug. 1, the Yankees were 58-44, leading the AL East by six games. Before this week, the Yankees had never been more than 12 games over .500 since ending the 2012 season 97-65. Entering Aug. 1, the Yankees held at least a share of first place, their longest run on top since 2012.

For June and July of this season, the Yankees were 32-19, the best record in the AL and second only to the Pittsburgh Pirates (34-18) across the Major Leagues. The Yankees were 10-4 since the All-Star break, best such record in the American League.

On June 29, the Yankees were in third place, though only one-half game out of first place. From then until the close of July, they were 17-9, while the rest of the AL East combined for a 44-64 record (The best of the division's other clubs were the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, both 12-15.).

The Yankees led the Major Leagues with their 17-7 July, which was their most wins in a calendar month since September 2012. Then again, the Yankees haven't had a losing record in July since 1993.

We can even call this group "The Bronx Bombers" without being sarcastic The big upgrade has been Mark Teixeira, who trimmed down during the offseason and vowed to make a comeback. He has.

In July, Teixeira batted .333 (29-for-87) with nine homers and 19 RBI, his most home runs in a calendar month since he hit nine homers in June 2011. By the way, Alex Rodriguez also hit nine homers for the Yankees in July.

Teixeira turned up multi-homer games on consecutive days this week, homering twice Thursday in Arlington, TX, against the Texas Rangers, then homering twice in Chicago against the Chicago White Sox Friday night in a 13-6 win. Teixeira is tied for the AL lead with 73 RBI, which goes well with his 28 homers.

Additionally, Yankees third baseman Chase Headley batted .370 (30-for-81) with 15 RBI in July, while shortstop Didi Gregorius batted .317 (26-for-82) with 13 RBI in the same month. Not to be sacrilegious, but Derek Jeter didn't have that good of a month since the last couple months of, uh, 2012.

Can we really say that Didi Gregorius has replaced Derek Jeter? At the very least, we can say he has replaced the Derek Jeter of 2014. Last season, Jeter hit four homers with 50 RBI, a .256 batting average and a .617 OPS, which comes to an OPS-plus of 75. This season, with two months left, Gregorius has four homers and 29 RBI, a .256 batting average with a .655 OPS, which is an OPS-plus of 83.

Is all of this to say that the Yankees are back? Not in the least. But they are in first, and that's really what it's about.

Harmon Killebrew Award: O's snag prize in sad city

The Harmon Killebrew Award ran straight into the unrest in Baltimore this week, with the Orioles taking the prize from the Chicago White Sox in a one-game meeting in an empty Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Orioles now will defend the Killebrew as the home team in St. Petersburg this weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Big Leagues in Los Angeles

As it happened, the game played in an empty Camden Yards Wednesday between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles had the Harmon Killebrew Award on the line. The White Sox had taken the Killebrew from the Kansas City Royals by marking two wins against them Sunday in Chicago.

Of course, riots broke out in Baltimore last weekend, the latest flare-up between interests so readily named as Blacks and police, but which is really about policy makers and Americans not asking the right questions about a swath of people made disposable by a global information economy.

No one has put it better than Orioles Chief Operating Officer John Angelos in a series of tweets:

"(M)y greater source of personal concern, outrage and sympathy beyond this particular case is focused neither upon one night’s property damage nor upon the acts, but is focused rather upon the past four-decade period during which an American political elite have shipped middle class and working class jobs away from Baltimore and cities and towns around the U.S. to third-world dictatorships like China and others, plunged tens of millions of good, hard-working Americans into economic devastation, and then followed that action around the nation by diminishing every American’s civil rights protections in order to control an unfairly impoverished population living under an ever-declining standard of living and suffering at the butt end of an ever-more militarized and aggressive surveillance state.

"The innocent working families of all backgrounds whose lives and dreams have been cut short by excessive violence, surveillance, and other abuses of the Bill of Rights by government pay the true price, and ultimate price, and one that far exceeds the importance of any kids’ game played tonight, or ever, at Camden Yards. We need to keep in mind people are suffering and dying around the U.S., and while we are thankful no one was injured at Camden Yards, there is a far bigger picture for poor Americans in Baltimore and everywhere who don’t have jobs and are losing economic civil and legal rights, and this makes inconvenience at a ballgame irrelevant in light of the needless suffering government is inflicting upon ordinary Americans."

Amen.

Friday, the Maryland State's Attorney General for Baltimore brought charges against six police officers, including one charged with murder, stemming from the death of Freddie Gray last weekend. All six officers were charged with assault and four were charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Under the circumstances, something as trivial as the Killebrew made barely a ripple. However, the Orioles hit as if their empty stadium were the setting for batting practice. They scored six times in the first inning, keyed by a three-run homer by Chris Davis against White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija.

The Orioles won the game, 8-2, and now take the prize to St. Petersburg, as it was decided that riot-torn Baltimore isn't a suitable place for baseball at the moment. The Orioles will play as the home team in three this weekend against the Tampa Bay Rays.

When last we left the Killebrew Award, the Royals had defended it in their first series of the season at home against the White Sox, then defended it with a sweep of the Angels.
