Ohio State can move into a three-way tie for third place all-time in the 41-year-old college football traveling championship with a win Saturday at Nebraska. The Buckeyes and Cornhuskers are tied for fifth all-time with 29 victories.
With 12 games of traveling championship in the last year, Ohio State is fast climbing the all-time standings.
The Buckeyes put a 76-5 thumping on Miami (Ohio) in Columbus on Sept. 21, giving them nine straight games with the title going back to a 26-6 home-field win against Michigan State last Nov. 10. The Buckeyes had another three-game championship earlier in the 2018 season.
At the start of 2018, the Buckeyes were tenth on the all-time list with 17 wins entering the 40th year of this national college football traveling championship. With a dozen wins since then, Ohio State has bulleted up to a fifth-place tie with Nebraska, both of which are 29-5 all-time. Nebraska hasn't won a game for the traveling title since a 24-17 win against Oklahoma State in Kansas City on Oct. 3, 1998.
Coincidentally, the Buckeyes are headed to Lincoln, NE, Saturday, angling to break that tie on the field against the Cornhuskers. A win for Ohio State puts it in a three-way tie for most wins historically in the traveling championship with Southern California (30-6) and Florida (30-14).
Alabama is the all-time leader in the traveling championship at 43-7, followed by Miami (FL) at 41-8.
On their rise through the all-time standings, the Buckeyes have surpassed Washington (18-10), Texas Christian (19-7), Baylor (21-10) and Florida State (25-8).
Ohio State's 71-point win against Miami (OH) merely ties the all-time blowout in the history of this college football traveling championship, and it also falls short of the record for points scored by one team in such a game. On Sept. 17, 1983, Nebraska laid an 84-13 bruising on Minnesota in Minneapolis.
During a spectacular run with the traveling championship in 2013, Baylor scored 70 points or more in four different games.
